The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, subclass 482, is one of the most commonly used employer-sponsored visas in Australia. It allows businesses to address genuine skill shortages by sponsoring overseas workers on a temporary basis.

Who Can Apply?

Both employers and applicants must meet specific criteria. Employers must be an approved sponsor, and the nominated occupation must be on the relevant skilled occupation list (either the MLTSSL or STSOL).

Duration

The TSS visa is granted for either 2 years (Short-term stream) or 4 years (Medium-term stream), depending on the nominated occupation.

Pathway to Permanent Residence

Holders of a TSS visa in a medium-term stream occupation may be eligible to apply for permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) after working for their sponsor for a minimum period.

Key Requirements

  • The employer must be an approved standard business sponsor
  • The position must be a genuine vacancy
  • The applicant must have relevant skills and experience
  • English language requirements must be met
  • Market salary rate must be paid
