Partner Visa Australia: The Complete Guide for 2025

The Australian partner visa is one of the most emotional and complex visa categories. It allows the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live and work in Australia.

Two-Stage Process

The partner visa is granted in two stages:

  • Stage 1 — Temporary Visa (Subclass 820): Granted while the permanent visa application is assessed. This allows you to live and work in Australia while waiting.
  • Stage 2 — Permanent Visa (Subclass 801): Granted after being in the relationship for at least 2 years from the date of application (or if you have a dependent child together).

Evidence of a Genuine Relationship

The Department of Home Affairs requires substantial evidence that your relationship is genuine and ongoing. This includes financial, social, household and commitment evidence.

Processing Times

Partner visa processing times can vary significantly — from 12 months to several years depending on demand and individual circumstances. Thorough preparation of your application is essential.
