A skills assessment is an evaluation conducted by a designated Australian assessing authority to confirm that your qualifications and work experience are suitable for your nominated occupation.

When Do You Need a Skills Assessment?

Skills assessments are required for many skilled migration visa pathways, including:

  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491)
  • Some streams of the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)

Assessing Authorities

Different occupations are assessed by different bodies. For example, Engineers Australia assesses engineers, while the Australian Computer Society (ACS) assesses IT professionals, and Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) assesses tradespeople.

Processing Times

Processing times vary by assessing authority — from a few weeks to several months. It is important to start this process early.

Our migration agents can advise you on which assessing authority applies to your occupation and assist you in preparing a strong application. Contact CGG MET for a free assessment.
