When applying for an Australian visa or student enrolment, you will almost certainly need to demonstrate English language proficiency. The two most widely accepted tests are IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic).

IELTS

IELTS is the world’s most widely recognised English language test. It is offered in two formats: Academic and General Training. For migration purposes, the General Training version is usually required; for university entry, the Academic version applies.

Scoring: IELTS uses a band score from 0–9 in four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

PTE Academic

PTE Academic is a computer-based test. Many test-takers find the computer-based format faster and more objective — results are typically available within 5 business days.

Scoring: PTE Academic scores from 10– 90 for each communicative skill.

Which Should You Choose?

  • If you are more comfortable speaking with a human examiner, IELTS may suit you better
  • If you prefer computers and want faster results, consider PTE Academic
  • Check your specific visa subclass requirements for accepted tests and minimum scores
